Mixe Pottery from Oaxaca

Mixe Pottery from Oaxaca

These pieces begin with the gathering of red clay, which is then shaped entirely by hand using traditional modeling techniques. Once formed, the pottery is left to dry in the sun for several days, then carefully polished and fired.

What visually distinguishes this collection is its organic finish and the characteristic black “fire clouds” or markings that appear across the surface. These unique patterns are created by the direct contact of firewood and flames during the firing process, making every vessel truly one of a kind. The bark of the wood plays an important role in producing these striking surface effects.

One of the most iconic features of Mixe pottery is its multiple spouts, which carry deep ceremonial meaning. In the Mixe worldview, these openings are not merely decorative — they symbolize the interconnectedness of the community and the flow of life. Traditionally, such vessels were used to share beverages during rituals or as water jars that allowed a continuous pour. While their origin is functional, many of these multi-spouted clay pieces have evolved into large-scale decorative works that preserve their pre-Hispanic form and enduring mystique.
