Patamban Clay Pottery

Patamban Clay Pottery

In the municipality of Tangancícuaro, Michoacán, the Purépecha town of Patamban is known for its remarkable traditional pottery — a functional art form deeply connected to the region’s cultural heritage.

This collection reflects the meeting of two Michoacán clay traditions: the red clay of Patamban and the white clay from the Lake Zirahuén region. The process begins with locally sourced red clay, which is kneaded and shaped entirely by hand, without a pottery wheel, using traditional coiling and hand-forming techniques to create vessels, pitchers, jars, and decorative pieces.

The white details are not painted on. Instead, artisans use pure white clay from Zirahuén, diluted into a liquid engobe and applied with fine brushes over the still-moist red clay surface.

Before firing, each piece is gently rubbed with a smooth stone to burnish the surface. This technique compacts both clays together, allowing the white Zirahuén decoration to become permanently integrated into the red clay body of Patamban and creating a natural satin finish.
