Wheat Straw Wall Circles
Wheat Straw Wall Circles from Tzintzuntzan
These wheat straw circles are handcrafted by master artisans from Tzintzuntzan, in the Purépecha region of Michoacán — a community shaped by fishing, agriculture, and a long tradition of handmade artistry.
The technique uses the delicate straw of wheat, known locally as popotillo, to create intricate decorative forms. Originally, these woven pieces were commonly made and sold for Holy Week and Christmas celebrations in Mexico, where straw ornaments became part of seasonal and religious decoration.
Over time, artisans developed their own techniques and designs, creating stars, circles, and woven compositions with remarkable creativity. Today, these pieces are appreciated as sculptural wall decor, combining natural materials, geometric beauty, and the living heritage of Michoacán’s artisan communities.
