Barro Negro from San Bartolo Coyotepec

Barro Negro from San Bartolo Coyotepec

Barro negro from San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, is one of Mexico’s most celebrated pottery traditions. Originating in the Zapotec communities of Oaxaca, this distinctive black clay has been shaped by artisans for generations and is admired for its elegant color, sculptural presence, and remarkable craftsmanship.

In its pre-Hispanic roots, this pottery was matte gray and primarily functional. In the 1950s, the artisan Doña Rosa transformed the tradition by polishing pieces with quartz stone just before firing them at a lower temperature, creating the lustrous black finish that would later bring barro negro to international recognition.

The process is meticulous and entirely handmade. Local clay is cleaned over time, shaped without a pottery wheel using ancestral techniques, and left to dry. To achieve the characteristic shine, the surface is burnished while still slightly damp and then fired in traditional low-oxygen kilns, producing the deep black tone and metallic luster for which these pieces are known.

Today, barro negro is prized mainly for its decorative beauty, though some matte and gray forms remain appreciated for their durability and functional use. In San Bartolo Coyotepec, just south of Oaxaca City, this tradition continues to support artisan families and remains a vital expression of Oaxacan cultural heritage.
